A CR2032, a CR2025 and a CR2016 are the same width and voltage, and differ in thickness and capacity. Energizer’s datasheets list all three at 20 mm across and 3 volts, made with lithium and manganese dioxide. The CR2032 is up to 3.2 mm thick, the CR2025 2.5 mm and the CR2016 1.6 mm, so the last two digits match the thickness in tenths of a millimeter. Thinner cells hold less, at a typical 235, 170 and 100 mAh. A CR2 is a different battery, a small cylinder Energizer lists for cameras and connected home devices.

What do the numbers mean?

They line up with the cell’s size. Energizer publishes a datasheet for each coin cell, and the CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 sheets give these dimensions and figures:

CR2032 CR2025 CR2016
Diameter (maximum) 20.00 mm 20.00 mm 20.00 mm
Thickness (maximum) 3.20 mm 2.50 mm 1.60 mm
Nominal voltage 3.0 V 3.0 V 3.0 V
Typical capacity 235 mAh 170 mAh 100 mAh
Typical weight 3.0 g 2.6 g 1.9 g

In each case the first two digits match the 20 mm width, and the last two match the maximum thickness in tenths of a millimeter. All three sheets list the same chemical system, “Lithium / Manganese Dioxide,” and each lists an IEC designation matching its name, such as “IEC-CR2032.”

One caveat on the capacity row. The CR2032 and CR2025 are rated on a 15,000-ohm load and the CR2016 on a 30,000-ohm load, so the CR2016’s figure was measured under a lighter drain.

What about the letters?

Different brands print different codes for the same size. Duracell’s CR 2032 page lists it as equivalent to “DL 2032” and “CR 2032.” Energizer’s battery replacement guide says its 2032 replaces batteries labeled “CR2032” and “KECR2032,” and lists watches, medical devices, key fobs, electronics and sporting goods as common uses.

Can a CR2025 replace a CR2032?

Energizer’s guide gives the general rule: “Do replace batteries with the size and type specified by the device’s manufacturer.” The two share a width and voltage, so the difference is the 0.7 mm of thickness and about 70 mAh of capacity in the table above. Your device’s manual or battery door names the size it was built for.

Is a CR2 the same battery?

No. Energizer lists the CR2 as its own size, “1CR2,” used in “photo, connected home devices.” Its datasheet shows a cylinder about 15.6 mm across and 27 mm tall, with an IEC designation of “CR15H270.” It shares the coin cells’ 3-volt lithium and manganese dioxide chemistry and holds a typical 800 mAh.

Keep them away from children

Every one of these datasheets carries the same warning: “KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Swallowing may lead to serious injury or death in as little as 2 hours due to chemical burns and potential perforation of the esophagus.” Each also tells device makers to design battery compartments that need a tool or two separate movements to open. What the Warning on Button Battery Packs Actually Means covers the federal rules behind that label.

Where this comes from

Every figure above comes from Energizer’s product datasheets for the CR2032, CR2025, CR2016 and 1CR2, its battery replacement guide, and Duracell’s CR 2032 product page, all read on October 26, 2026. This post names no battery to buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CR2032 and a CR2025?
Thickness and capacity, per Energizer's datasheets. Both are 20 mm across and 3 volts with the same lithium and manganese dioxide chemistry. The CR2032 is up to 3.2 mm thick with a typical capacity of 235 mAh; the CR2025 is up to 2.5 mm thick with 170 mAh.
Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?
Energizer's battery replacement guide says to replace batteries "with the size and type specified by the device's manufacturer." The two are the same width and voltage, but the CR2025 is thinner and its datasheet lists about 70 mAh less capacity.
Is a CR2 the same as a CR2032?
No. Energizer lists the CR2 as a separate size, 1CR2, for photo and connected home devices. Its datasheet shows a cylinder about 15.6 mm across and 27 mm tall, with a typical capacity of 800 mAh.
