Diaper sizes are set by weight, not age, and Pampers’ own chart says so in its first line. A 3-month-old might be in newborn diapers or already in size 2. The number to check is the baby’s current weight against the chart for the brand you buy, and the ranges overlap on purpose so fit can break the tie. Pampers’ own chart names three signs a diaper is too small: leaks, tight tabs, and red marks on the skin.
What one manufacturer’s chart says
Pampers publishes a diaper size and weight chart on its own site, and its first instruction is the whole point of this post: “Use a diaper size chart by weight—not age. This is the most accurate way to find the right fit and avoid leaks.”
Its chart, as published, runs from Preemie at 6 pounds through Newborn at up to 10 pounds, then size 1 at 8 to 14 pounds, size 2 at 10 to 22, size 3 at 13 to 26, size 4 at 15 to 34, size 5 at 20 to 37, size 6 at 23 to 44, size 7 at 26 to 50, and size 8 at 30 pounds and up. Those are Pampers’ numbers for Pampers’ diapers. Other brands publish their own charts, and the one to use is the chart for the diaper you’re actually buying.
The same chart lists an average number of diapers per day for each size, from up to 10 a day in newborn down to up to 6 a day from size 5 onward. That figure is what turns a size into a reorder plan, and our diapers calculator does that math.
Why the ranges overlap
Look at the chart again. A 12-pound baby is inside size 1 and size 2 at the same time. A 20-pound baby is inside sizes 2, 3, 4, and 5. That overlap is deliberate. Pampers says it directly: “every baby is unique. Along with checking your baby’s weight, look at how the diaper fits around the waist and legs.”
So weight gets you to the right two sizes. Fit picks between them. Pampers describes a good fit as “a snug waistband, no gaps at the legs, and no red marks on your baby’s skin.”
The signs it’s time to size up
Pampers names the cues on the same page. “Frequent leaks, tight tabs, or discomfort may mean your baby needs a bigger size.” Its fuller guidance is to move up “when your baby is in the weight range and the diaper feels tight, leaves red marks, or leaks despite a proper fit.”
It also warns against jumping early. “Large gaps around the legs may mean the diaper is too big, even if the waist feels snug,” and “sizing up too soon can cause leaks or blowouts.” The check it gives is physical: two fingers should fit comfortably under each leg opening, with the cuffs pulled outward.
How to use this when you buy
Weigh the baby, find the brand’s own chart, and buy the size whose range the baby sits in the middle of rather than the edge. When leaks or red marks start while the baby is inside the next range, move up. When you do, the diapers-per-day figure drops with the new size, which means the box lasts longer than the last one did. That is the one place sizing up saves you something.
Where this comes from
Every size range, diapers-per-day figure, and fit instruction above is quoted or drawn from Pampers’ own diaper size chart page, linked in the text. It is one manufacturer’s chart for its own products. Runlow has not tested any diaper for fit, and nothing here is a claim about any brand beyond what that brand states on its own site.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do the weight ranges overlap between sizes?
- Because two babies at the same weight can be shaped differently. Pampers' chart puts a 12-pound baby inside size 1 and size 2 at once, and tells you to pick by fit rather than by the number alone. The overlap is the chart admitting that weight is a starting point, not the whole answer.
- How do I know a diaper is too small?
- Pampers names three signs on its own chart. Leaks despite a proper fit, tabs that feel tight, and red marks on the skin. Any of those while the baby is inside the next size's weight range is the manufacturer's cue to move up.
- Can sizing up early cause problems?
- Per Pampers, yes. Its guidance says sizing up too soon can cause leaks or blowouts, because a diaper that is too big leaves gaps at the legs even when the waist feels snug. The check it gives is two fingers fitting comfortably under each leg opening.
