Standard detergent in a high-efficiency (HE) machine creates more suds than the machine’s low water level can rinse away, which can smother the tumbling action it relies on to clean and trigger a safety pause on many models. HE detergent in a standard machine causes none of that. The compatibility problem only runs in one direction.
Why HE machines need a different detergent at all
High-efficiency washers use a fraction of the water a standard top-loader fills with, and most don’t have a central agitator: they clean by tumbling clothes through a small amount of water and detergent repeatedly instead of swishing them around in a full tub. Standard detergent is formulated assuming that large volume of water is there to dilute suds and carry them away. Take the water down to HE levels and that same detergent produces far more suds than the machine can rinse out in one cycle.
What actually happens when the wrong one goes in
Suds and cleaning power aren’t the same thing, whatever the marketing has implied for decades. Actual cleaning comes from surfactants surrounding soil and enzymes breaking down stains, plus the physical friction of fabric tumbling against fabric. Excess suds work against that last part: they cushion clothes from each other, which reduces the friction the machine depends on. Many HE machines also have oversuds sensors that detect the problem and respond by pausing the cycle, adding extra rinses, or in some cases stopping mid-cycle, which is often the actual reason a load “won’t finish.” Left unresolved over many loads, undissolved detergent film can also build up inside the drum and gasket and contribute to musty odor.
The direction that doesn’t cause problems
HE detergent works fine in a standard machine. It’s still a surfactant-and-enzyme formula, just built to produce fewer suds per dose. With more water available to work with, it cleans normally and simply produces less foam than you might expect. The compatibility issue is specific to putting a high-sudsing formula into a low-water machine, not the reverse.
How to tell which one you have
Compatible detergent carries an “HE” mark on the packaging, an industry-wide labeling convention rather than a claim any one brand invented. Your washer’s own manual, or the inside of the lid or door, usually states whether it’s HE as well, since it’s not always obvious from the outside.

- One load is unlikely to cause lasting damage. The immediate risk is a stalled or extended cycle and poorly rinsed clothes, not mechanical harm from a single instance.
- Can I use less regular detergent instead of switching?
- Using less reduces the sudsing problem but doesn't formulate around it the way an HE product does, and dosing by feel makes it hard to get consistent results. Switching detergents solves the actual mismatch.
- Does "HE" only refer to the detergent, or the machine too?
- Both. "HE" describes the washing machine's low-water design and the detergent formulated to work in it. The two labels track each other, which is why the packaging convention exists in the first place.
