Enzymes in laundry detergent act like molecular scissors: each type targets one class of stain and cuts its large, insoluble molecules into pieces small enough to dissolve in water and rinse away. Why “breaking down” beats “lifting off”

Surfactants, detergent’s other main ingredient, work by surrounding a particle of dirt or grease and lifting it away from fabric without changing what that particle actually is. Enzymes work differently. A protease doesn’t lift a blood stain off your shirt: it cuts the protein molecules inside the stain into fragments small enough to dissolve in water and rinse out. That’s a chemical change, not a mechanical one, and it’s why enzyme-based stain removal keeps working on stains a plain surfactant wash leaves behind.

Why pretreating and time matter more than heat

Enzymes are proteins themselves, and like most proteins, they need contact time with a stain to work through it, and they can break down under very hot water. That’s the opposite of how most people expect stain removal to work. A longer soak or a pretreat step gives an enzyme time to fully break down a stain before the wash cycle rinses everything away, and that’s a bigger lever than switching to a hotter setting. Most modern formulas are engineered to stay active across a range of temperatures, including cold washes, specifically so you don’t need hot water for enzymes to do their job.

What enzymes don’t do

Enzymes don’t lighten color the way bleach does. Bleach works by oxidizing pigment molecules so they no longer absorb light the same way. An enzyme removes the source of a stain rather than altering its color chemically. If a stain looks lighter after an enzyme-based wash, it’s usually because the stain-causing material is gone, not because it was bleached.

Frequently asked questions

Do all detergents contain enzymes?
No. Some formulas, including many marketed as sensitive-skin or baby detergents, leave enzymes out because they can be an irritant for some people. Check the ingredient list on your own bottle rather than assuming.
Can enzymes damage fabric?
Cellulase, the enzyme that smooths fiber, works on the cotton itself rather than a stain, which is why it's formulated to act gradually across many washes instead of aggressively in one. Protease, amylase, and lipase act on stain material, not the fabric underneath it.
Do enzymes work in cold water?
Most modern detergent formulas are built to stay active across a range of wash temperatures, including cold, since very hot water can break enzymes down before they finish working. Contact time with the stain matters more than water temperature.
